Measurement Protocol Use Cases
This is not an introduction or tutorial for using Measurement Protocol! There are plenty of those out there. Instead, this is more a library of actual, real life use cases for Measurement Protocol. So far, I’ve added some of the best examples I’ve worked on for my clients. And I’ll continue to update it.
Also, if you yourself have a great use case; then you’re more than welcome to get in touch, and I might post it here tool.
The Basics of Measurement Protocol
There is a wide range of use cases for Measurement Protocol. But in general terms, the Measurement Protocol is used to track those interactions (often transactions) that are not directly triggered by the user on a website. Actually, it doesn’t have to be website interactions at all, and I’ve seen people use Measurement Protocol to track soda consumption, office visits, indoor temperature and much more.
But some very general, website examples include:
- Track sales that are closed offline (by phone, a meeting etc.)
- Track recurring payments (e.g. for subscription products) when payments are completed without actual user interactions
- Track attendance for seminars, courses and the like
…and much more. In fact, the Measurement Protocol mimics the functionality of the well-known analytics.js library you have on your website. This means that the Measurement Protocol can track all the same types of this; be it pageviews, events or transactions etc.
Measurement Protocol Use Cases
As you probably can imagine, having an API to track something or anything in Google Analytics, opens a world of possibilities. The list below contains some of the projects I’ve worked with recently for different clients of mine.
I have anonymized the cases to the best of my ability. So some aspects to the companies/businesses themselves might seem a bit vague. But I hope that the approach to tracking is clear.
- Price Comparison Site for Home Improvements
- Server Side Tracking in Finance
- Tracking Product Sample Orders in Medico
Other interesting and/or fun use cases (not done by me!):
- Track soda consumption with Google Analytics and Flic buttons by Jacob Worsøe
- Measure store visits using a Raspberry Pi and an infrared sensor by Artefact
Do you know other cool use cases? Did you do one yourself? Let me know in the comments or contact me.
